ESTIMATES FOR BF WOOD
FORMWORKS:
1. Form Lumber = 110-140 bf / cubic meter of concrete
2. Form ply wood = 0.8 pieces of 4’x8’ plywood form per cubic of concrete.
3. Assorted Nails= 1 keg of assorted nails per 2000 bf of nailing surface.
Legend:
45 kilos of nails = 1 keg
1 keg = 100 lbs. = 45 kg.
FORMULAS TO FIND APPROXIMATE NO. OF NAILS REQUIRED ( REF. U. S. ARMY ENGINEER FIELD DATA)
No. of pounds ( 12d + 60 d, framing) = d /6 x bf/ 100
No. of pounds (2d + 12 d, sheathing) = d/ 4 x bf/100
Where:
d = Size of desired Nail in Pennies
bf = Total Board Feet to be nailed
Thanks for this very informative blog. It helps me a lot in construction estimates. However, I would like to ask a little detail in plywood estimates per volume of concrete. You wrote, 0.8 pcs per cubic of concrete? per cubic foot or cubic meter. Is it .8 pcs or 8 pcs? Thanks.

ReplyDeleteYour detailed breakdown of material estimates is incredibly helpful, especially for those of us who are hands-on with our home improvement projects. The way you’ve laid out the calculations and considerations gives a clear sense of what’s needed before starting a project, which can save a lot of time and effort down the line. It’s clear that having a solid plan is crucial, and your insights make the process feel much more manageable.
ReplyDeleteI’m currently planning to build a retaining wall in my backyard and found your approach to material estimates particularly relevant. Are there any specific tips or common pitfalls to avoid when estimating materials for a retaining wall, especially when dealing with varying soil conditions or uneven terrain?
